Free Information Literacy Grade Level Assessments Through TRAILS

The MASL Office received the following information about a free resource that may be of interest to MASL members.

New for 2010-11: TRAILS (Tool for Real-time Assessment of Information Literacy Skills) now offers new grade level assessments and updates for grades 3, 6, 9 and 12. As always, these information literacy assessments are freely available at

TRAILS now includes:

* Assessments for grades 3 and 12, in addition to those previously available for grades 6 and 9;

* Pre-tests and post-tests for grades 3, 6, 9 and 12;

* Assessments by information literacy competency categories for grades 3, 6, 9, 12

Reported value of TRAILS for teachers, school librarians and administrators:

* Get a class snapshot of students' overall understanding of information literacy

* Identify students' weakest areas as it relates to information literacy

* Measure the progress of students in grades 3 through 12 through pre- and post-tests

TRAILS is standards-based, using the current standards of AASL Information Power, AASL Standards for 21st Century Learners and Ohio Academic Content Standards. Assessments have been administered to over 326,000 students throughout the United States and internationally. Over 10,000 school librarians are now registered users.

TRAILS is a project of Kent State University Libraries and has been funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the U.S. Department of Education, LSTA and the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation.
