Outstanding School Library Program of the Year Award

MASL has a NEW Award to recognize an outstanding school library program.  This award honors an exemplary program demonstrating strength in the areas of Foundations, Building the Learning Environment, Teaching and Learning, Building Collaborative Partnerships, Advocacy and Outreach, and Leadership, and is modeled after the AASL National School Library Program of the Year Award   Winners will receive a $2,500 grant for books from Gumdrop Books.

The deadline to submit an application is December 15.

Enter your per pupil budget for the last three years for library materials (print, digital, and audiovisual resources); include local, state, and federal funds. Do not include funds for textbooks, library supplies or equipment.
Please evaluate and describe your school library program with regards to the following elements.

1. Describe the school library program mission, goals and objectives as the relate to the mission goals and objectives of the school and district.

2. Describe the policies, procedures, and guidelines that support equitable access to ideas and information throughout the school community.

3. Describe how library scheduling is aligned with AASL's Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School LIbrary Programs (Fixed, flex, open, access, etc.).

4. Circulation policies facilitate and encourage use of library resources.

5. The facilities are attractive and support a variety of learning experiences that engage students in information access via multiple formats.

6. The library and its staff exhibit a welcoming atmosphere for students and staff.

1. Describe how you are demonstrating a participatory culture through library led initiative, showing instances where you are a learner.

2. Describe how your library website contains information for parents and students, exhibits students' work, provides information and reference resources, links to other libraries and academic sites.

3. Describe how your website ensures individual students are able to access resources and receive assistance at the moment of need throughout the school day.

4. Describe how you are developing a collection that supports the curriculum and provides for students' interests and needs in a variety of formats.

5. Show evidence of a integrated library program where classes are flexibly scheduled into the library on an as needed basis to facilitate research, training and utilization of technology.

6. The facilities are accessible to students and staff throughout the school day, before and after school.

7. Policies and procedures have been adopted regarding confidentiality of library records and ethical use of information. These policies are regularly reviewed.

1. Describe how you are providing instruction based on current best practices in librarianship, education and educational technology.

2. Describe how you are providing instruction based on AASL's Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Programs.

3. Describe how you are collaborating with classroom teachers to design, implement and evaluate inquiry lessons to provide differentiation and adaptable experiences for students of all abilities and interests to meet curricular requirements.

4. Describe how you are providing instruction using 21st century technology tools.

5. Describe how you are promoting reading for pleasure and lifelong learning as part of the library's core program.

1. Describe how you are working with an advisory group that includes teachers, students, parents and community members.

2. Describe how you are planning with classroom teachers and other educators to cultivate interactive, relevant learning experiences for all students.

3. Describe how you are serving on faculty/grade level teams and building level committees that build collaborative partnerships.

4. Describe how you are participating in a greater professional learning community including public library, museums, local community organizations, local, state and national education and library organizations.

5. Describe how you are participating and leading professional development with other learning specialists in the school and district.

6. Describe how you are partnering with teachers outside the boundaries of physical library space. Describe how you are continuously developing/strengthening/expanding working relationships for increased student learning.

1. Describe how you are actively soliciting feedback and input from stakeholders.

2. Describe how you are advocating for equitable access to information in all formats by cultivating relationships and communicating resource needs to decision makers and stakeholders.

3. Describe how you are demonstrating the value of your school library program through publicizing accomplishments and activities in a variety of venues.

1. Describe how you are aligning the school library program to local, state and national professional standards.

2. Describe how you are sharing knowledge and experiences with others via print, social media and/or presentations at various levels.

3. Describe how you are using research in making evidence based decisions.

4. Describe how you are demonstrating the use of best practices in teaching and learning, adopting new technology, and how you are empowering others of the learning community to implement those best practices and new technologies.

5. Describe how you are being visionary in planning for the future and continually retooling to meet challenges.

6. Describe how you are participating in the decision making process for school and district programs.
